Our Story

Hubert’s Café first opened its doors in 1943 on Mt. Ephraim Avenue in Camden, New Jersey.

For thirty years, it was owned and operated by William H. Hubert Sr. and Stella Hubert, my family. It was a neighborhood café in the truest sense of the word. A place where people gathered before work, lingered over coffee, and found comfort in familiar faces and simple, honest food.

It wasn’t extravagant.
It wasn’t trendy.
It was dependable.

And that mattered.

When the original café closed in 1973, the doors shut, but the name never lost its meaning.

Decades later, that same name is being brought back to life.

Hubert’s Café today is not a replica of what once stood on Mt. Ephraim Avenue. It is a revival of the spirit that defined it, warmth, community, and food made with care. What began as a family-run café is now being reimagined with intention and a clear vision for the future.

This is not just about honoring the past.
It’s about continuing it.

The goal is to once again create a space where people feel welcome. Where seasonal menus feel thoughtful. Where comfort is intentional. Where the name Hubert’s Café stands for something lasting.

What started in 1943 is not just a memory.

It’s a legacy still unfolding.

🤍 Meet Billy

Hi, I’m Billy.

Rebuilding Hubert’s Café isn’t just about opening a business. It’s about carrying forward a name that means something to my family, and now, to me.

Growing up, I always knew the story of the original Hubert’s Café in Camden. But it wasn’t until later that I understood what it truly represented: hard work, pride, hospitality, and community. Bringing it back feels less like starting something new and more like continuing something that was always meant to live on.

My passion for food deepened when I attended Johnson & Wales University in Providence, where I studied culinary arts and learned the foundations of technique, balance, and intention. That education shaped how I approach everything I create, not just as recipes, but as experiences.

But beyond formal training, what drives me most is how food makes people feel.

Comfort. Nostalgia. Celebration. Connection.

I believe food should be thoughtful. Seasonal. Crafted with care. Worth sharing.

For now, Hubert’s Café is growing one season at a time, small-batch, intentional, and thoughtfully crafted. But the vision has always been bigger: a brick-and-mortar space filled with warmth, wood accents, natural light, and that quiet, comforting feeling of walking into a place that feels like home.

Until then, I’m building it with patience, purpose, and a deep respect for where it all began.

Thank you for being part of the journey.
